Cermaq Canada to review the release of a draft transition framework regarding our sector in British Columbia

The details of the draft framework require an extensive review internally and with the First Nations with whom we have agreements.

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC—Today we received the delayed draft transition framework from the Canadian government, outlining next steps in the transition process for salmon aquaculture in British Columbia.

Throughout this process to date, the government has promised to deliver a responsible, realistic and achievable Transition Plan. Over the last four years, we have worked hard to meaningfully engage in the transition process set out by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, providing our expertise and input in hopes that the resulting plan would achieve those aims. It is encouraging to see that representatives from other Ministries are now joining the transition process, reflecting the multitude of positive impacts our sector has on reconciliation, innovation, the economy and the environment.

The details of the draft framework require an extensive review internally and with the First Nations with whom we have agreements. As we take time to complete that review, Cermaq Canada remains committed to continuing to develop a modern salmon farming sector in British Columbia. We strongly believe that our industry has a critical role to play in advancing economic reconciliation in British Columbia while supporting good jobs and a healthy coastal economy that stretches across Canada. We look forward to continuing to engage with the Canadian government as the transition process moves forward.
